Georgetown comes up in our reviews more often than the White House, the Kennedy Center and GWU combined. It is also one of the harder places in Washington to base a trip: no Metro station, and very little parking.
Our Foggy Bottom home sits just east of it, across Rock Creek, on a quiet tree-lined street. Close enough to walk to dinner on the waterfront, far enough that M Street on a Saturday night stays on M Street.
How close, on foot
Measured from the front door with Google Maps walking directions:
- Georgetown waterfront (Washington Harbour and Georgetown Waterfront Park): about ten minutes, half a mile.
- M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, the center of Georgetown's shops and restaurants: about seventeen minutes.
- Georgetown University, main campus: about 1.4 miles, roughly half an hour on foot or a short ride.
- Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro: about five minutes, the nearest station to Georgetown.
- Kennedy Center: about ten minutes, and the Lincoln Memorial about fifteen.
Why stay next door rather than in it
The Metro. Georgetown has no station of its own. From Foggy Bottom you walk five minutes to the Blue, Orange and Silver lines, which reach the Smithsonian, Arlington and Reagan National Airport without a change.
The car. Street parking in Georgetown is scarce, mostly two hours, and competitive. Our home has a free private space behind the house, 21 feet by 10 feet, with a ChargePoint Level 2 EV charger included. Park once and walk to Georgetown like everyone else. How the parking works.
The quiet. The house is on a residential block of rowhouses, not a commercial street. One guest put it as close enough to walk most places, but on a quiet street, which is the combination most Georgetown visitors are looking for.

The home
Two bedrooms, two and a half baths, and about 1,500 square feet. A king suite with a walk-in shower, a guest room with two twins that convert to a king, and a king size sleeper sofa, so it sleeps five. A fully equipped KitchenAid kitchen with dining for six, a full-size washer and dryer, gigabit Wi-Fi, a desk with a printer, and a private enclosed patio with a gas grill. Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are three blocks away.

No. Georgetown has no Metro station. The nearest is Foggy Bottom-GWU on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines, about five minutes on foot from our Foggy Bottom home, which makes the house a practical base for Georgetown and the rest of the city.
