Where to eat near each home.

Restaurants come up in our reviews more often than any monument. Nearly one guest in five mentions where they ate, and groceries are close behind. These are the places I actually send guests to from each home, not a directory. Walking times are measured from each front door with Google Maps.

Near the Foggy Bottom home

Foggy Bottom sits between the West End, the Kennedy Center and Georgetown, so the choice runs from neighborhood cafes to the Georgetown waterfront.

• Tazza Cafe, 600 New Hampshire Avenue NW, in the Watergate across from the Kennedy Center. Casual pizza and cafe food. About seven minutes.
• Bluestone Lane, 1100 23rd Street NW, West End. Australian-style cafe for coffee and brunch. About eight minutes.
• Farmers Fishers Bakers, 3000 K Street NW, on the Georgetown waterfront. The one to book if you want dinner with a view of the river. About ten minutes.
• Levain Bakery, 3131 M Street NW, Georgetown. The cookies are the reason to go, and children agree. About sixteen minutes.
• Pinstripes, 1064 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Georgetown. Bowling, bocce and a casual dinner under one roof, good with older children. About seventeen minutes.
• Boulangerie Christophe, 1422 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Georgetown. A French bakery for pastries and coffee. About twenty minutes.
• The Tombs, 1226 36th Street NW. The classic Georgetown University hangout, near the famous steps. About half an hour on foot.
• Old Ebbitt Grill, 675 15th Street NW, by the White House. Feeding Washington since 1856 and worth doing once. About half an hour on foot, or a short ride.

Groceries. Whole Foods Market at 2201 I Street NW and Trader Joe's at 1101 25th Street NW are each about six minutes on foot. The kitchen is fully equipped, so plenty of guests cook at least once. See the Foggy Bottom home.

Near the Capitol Hill home

The Capitol Hill home is unusually well served: four good restaurants within about five minutes, then Eastern Market and Barracks Row a pleasant walk south.

• Nostra Cucina, 320 D Street NE. Cozy neighborhood Italian. About three minutes.
• Cafe Berlin, 322 Massachusetts Avenue NE. German comfort food and beer. About five minutes.
• Bistro Cacao, 316 Massachusetts Avenue NE. A French bistro, the one for a special night. About five minutes.
• Pupatella, 301 Massachusetts Avenue NE. Wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, casual and good with children. About five minutes.
• The Monocle, 107 D Street NE, by the Senate. The classic Capitol Hill steakhouse. About seven minutes.
• Union Kitchen, 538 3rd Street NE. Coffee, breakfast and a small grocery. About seven minutes.
• Tunnicliff's Tavern, 222 7th Street SE, by Eastern Market. Burgers, brunch and a relaxed neighborhood feel. About eighteen minutes.
• Pete's Diner, 212 2nd Street SE. A classic diner breakfast. About eighteen minutes.
• Ted's Bulletin, 505 8th Street SE, Barracks Row. All-day breakfast and house-made Pop-Tarts. About twenty-three minutes, or a short ride.
• Matchbox, 521 8th Street SE, Barracks Row. Brick-oven pizza. About twenty-four minutes, or a short ride.

Eastern Market. 225 7th Street SE, a fifteen to twenty minute walk. The indoor market hall is open Tuesday through Sunday and closed on Mondays, and the outdoor market fills the weekends. Worth a Saturday morning.

Groceries. Capitol Hill Supermarket at 241 Massachusetts Avenue NE is about three minutes for everyday basics. Giant at 300 H Street NE is a longer walk, and Whole Foods at 600 H Street NE and Trader Joe's at 750 Pennsylvania Avenue SE are a short drive. See the Capitol Hill home.

Delivery, and nights in

All the usual delivery services work at both addresses: Instacart and Amazon Fresh for groceries, and the usual apps for meals.
